Miscellaneous

The syndicated chess column carried by the Sheffield & Rotherham Independent Weekly Supplement published on Saturdays tended to list some local clubs at the start, though only the odd two or three.

One such listing, on 27/02/1886 for instance, was read as follows.

Oxford Chess Club meet every Wednesday and Friday at 8.00 p.m., at the Crookesmoor Liberal Club, Hon. Sec. B. C. Davis, 25 Blake Street.

The somewhat curious name of the club will have been due to its catchment area including the territory around Oxford Street.
