Non-Chess Life

Johann Philipp Brandt was born in 1847/48.  His place pf birth was given in the 1881 census as Frankfurt, Germany, though which Frankfurt was not specified.

There was a Johann Philipp Brandt of Germany who became a naturalised British citizen on 16/02/1876.  As no such person seems to have been listed in the 1871 census, it seems likely that he had arrived in England in the early 1870s.  Further, as there was only one such person evident in the 1881 census, it seems very probably that this was the “John P Brandt” of Bradford in the 1881.

The 1881 census listed 33-year-old Frankfurt-born “John P Brandt” lodging at 5 Carlton Place, Bradford.  By occupation he was a manager at a stuff warehouse.  It seems from this that he adopted the English “John” as his forename for informal purposes.  He signed himself as “J. Ph. Brandt” (see below).

Whether he moved home to London isn’t clear, but that is where he died.

Death

The death of Johann Philipp Brandt at age 35 was recorded in the first quarter of 1884, at St. George, Hanover Square, London.

Chess

He played for Bradford in the 1882 Leeds v Bradford match.

He played in the 1882 D Y Mills blindfold simultaneous display in Bradford.

He attended the West Yorkshire Chess Association meetings of 1882 and 1883.

In 1883, at least, he was secretary of Bradford Chess Club, and therefore of the West Yorkshire Chess Association for the 1883 meeting, as it was held in Bradford.  The following image is of his writing, including signature, in the WYCA minute book:
