In the semi-final round, Northumberland met Cheshire at Darlington on 21/01/1939, over 16 boards.  The teams tied on game points, but Northumberland won on board elimination.

Also in the semi-final round, Lancashire met Durham at York on 21/01/1939, over 16 boards.  Lancashire won by 11½ points to 4½:  Lancashire should then have competed with Leicestershire and Surrey for the English Counties Championship, but these matches were postponed until after the war.  Then in 1944 it was decided to abandon the suspended competition due to difficulties in complying with eligibility rules etc after the long delay.
