Northern Counties Championship

Round One

Played at the Grand Central Hotel, Leeds,

on Saturday, 26/01/1907

over 30 boards

There were a number of spectators, among whom were Edwin Woodhouse, donor of the Woodhouse Cup, and the well-known master, Francis Joseph Lee.

The Lancashire team was captained by Albert Edward Moore, donor of the Northern Counties’ Championship Trophy.  The Yorkshire team was captained by C. W. Jefferey of Leeds, current Yorkshire Champion.  It is notable that the Yorkshire Champion was not playing on board one as had earlier been the tradition.

Play started rather late, as a result of which there were rather a lot of unfinished games left for adjudication.  Of the thirteen such unfinished games, eight were subsequently agreed by the captains, but the remaining five were sent to an independent adjudicator.

Yorkshire had white on the odd numbered boards.  The results, except for the final five adjudications, were as follows:

After the match the players and officials were given dinner by the Leeds Chess Club, with Samuel Redhead Meredith, president of Leeds Chess Club, in the chair.

The match was reported in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 28/01/1907, with the initial eight adjudications being later reported in the Sheffield Daily Telegraph of 04/02/1907.  The above 10½-14½ score was not the final score, but was the score before the final five adjudications were known.  Those remaining five adjudication results as yet evade the present writer, but clearly Lancashire won the match, as they were NCCU champions that season (as usual).
