Played at Bradford,

on Saturday, 08/03/1873,

over 11 boards, 3 games per board (time permitting).

This was described as the fourth match contested between Bradford and Halifax.  The three previous matches were 1870 Halifax v Bradford (after the recent revival of the club), a “return” match, 1870 Bradford v Halifax, and 1872 Bradford v Halifax.  However, since the 1872 math was itself described as a “return” match, that would suggest there was an 1871/72 Halifax v Bradford match, and that this was in fact the fifth match between these clubs.

The target of 3 games per board was achieved on 8 of the 11 boards; only 2 games were played on 2 boards, and on board 3 only one game was managed.

Former Bradford player Maximillian Edward Werner, who had had a hand in the “revival” of Halifax Chess Club, was playing on board one for Halifax, and, perhaps a little pretentiously, gave his opponent odds of pawn and move.

Results reported in both the Bradford Observer of Tuesday, 11/03/1873, and the Halifax Guardian of 15/03/1873, were as follows:
