In 1857, Huddersfield and Leeds Chess Clubs engaged in a test of strength involving 12 players from each club.  Each club’s players were divided into 4 sections of 3 players, according to strength.  Each of a club’s players in a given section was to play one game against each of the other club’s players in the same section.  Sections 1 and 2 were played at Leeds in May, and sections 3 and 4 were played at Huddersfield in June.  At stake was a set of Staunton chessmen.

 

The results of the games were published in the Leeds Mercury of 09/06/1857, p.3, as in the following table:
