1847 John Rhodes – Edward Cronhelm Match, Leeds

Edward Cronhelm was a promising young Halifax player whose potential was not perhaps fully realised as he elected to emigrate to Ireland.

This was one of two matches played by 26-year-old Edward Cronhelm against strong Leeds players.  John Rhodes, who was two days short of six years older than Edward Cronhelm, was at this time regarded as (unofficial) Yorkshire Champion.

The match was to be of five games, with the first to win three (draws ignored?) being deemed the winner.  Games were to be played in Leeds, commencing 19th July 1847.  The match had concluded by early September 1849.  Rhodes won 4-1.  [CPC VIII 1847 pp.226, 288]
